Some
Background
Poggio
Pelliccia is a monumental tomb of the tholos type.
The
predecessors of such types of tombs had appeared in the area between the
end of IX century and VIII B.C. This was a period which showed a general
change of trend in the burial practice and followed what was already an
established practice in central-south part of Etruria.
Etruscans
moved from cremation practice to burials. Tombs started to appear and
some of them have been of great help to discover events, social and political
events of the time. The first examples of tombs were made of circles of
white stone and covered by a "tumulus" of soil.
Those
tombs did uncover real treasuries such as ornaments, precious vases and
objects imported from the Eastern Mediterranean basin, together with refined
object which were locally produced.
