Massa Marittima. Truly beautiful town, small and full of flair. Worth visiting for the spectacular cathedral.
Giuncarico. Giuncarico is a lovely medieval village and is proudly perched on the top of a hill just a few kilometres from Poggio Pelliccia. In fact Giuncarico is our local council and in all its beauty visible from Poggio Pelliccia. www.comune.gavorrano.gr.it/giuncarico for more info. Just minutes from us is la Castellaccia, where there are still remains of a medieval castle to be seen.
Roccastrada. Roccastrada is a medieval village perched on a hill and like most medieval villages still full of flair and charm. From Roccastrada it is possible to carry out hikes, mountain bike tours and horse rides through fantastic vegetation of the Maremman landscape through medieval villages, old churches remains of fortresses which still carry testimony of the past culture.
Roccatederighi. Roccatederighi can be considered rather special and well worth a visit. The village has been carved from stone and offers magnificent views of the whole Maremma. Steeply hanging on the rock, it will take you some effort and water to reach it.
Montepescali. Just a few kilometres from Poggio Pelliccia, Montepescali is a lovely medieval town dating back 10th century. You can reach the village by car despite some confusing sign posting. The village is typical of medieval times and is perched on a hill and if you are in the area it deserves a visit. From the Baluardo on the western wall of the town ,you will enjoy the most fantastic view to the sea, the gulf isles and according to the Montepascali websise, even the mountains of Corsica. You can reach Montepescali from the SS1 exit Montepescali.
Montemassi. Montemassi is a medieval village just a few kilometres away from the sea, overlooled by a medieval castle. Pieceful and typical of the medieval Tuscan civilisation.
Caldana and Ravi. Tuscany is very well known for its medieval towns and villages, and Caldana and Ravi are two of them, and are testimonial of their medieval past and are well maintained and loved by its citizens.
Gavorrano/Bagno di Gavorrano. Medieval village, in the middle of the Maremman countryside. Interesting trip to Bagno di Gavorrano, nowadays the most inhabited area of the village, but also where tourists can visit the old Baths and enjoy very well equipped sporting facilities.
S. Galgano. San Galgano is famous for its wonderful Abbey. The Abbey was built in the 13th century and in recent days, despite part of it collapsing in the 17th century, its remains are still impressive to be seen today. The ruins of the abbey can be reached from the S223 follow the directions to Monticiano and then follow the signposting to Abbazia San Galgano. From Roccastrada follow the S73 to Monticiano and then to the Abbey.
Sorano. Sorano is a medieval village now inhabited as it was built on land prone to landslides. The old village is still intact and maintains all its original characteristics of a village built in tuff, - rock formed by volcanic ash.
Scarlino and Tirli. Medieval villages, Scarlino is steeply located on wooded hillsides. They are surrounded by remains of monasteries and fortresses and apart from visiting the villages, you can do interesting walks from behind Tirli to the Malavalle monastery and to the spring of Sant'Anna.
